On October 15, 2001, the Government of Alberta enacted the Laboratory Data Quality Assurance Policy.  This policy requires that all facilities reporting analytical data to Alberta Environment, through an Alberta Environment Approval or a Code of Practice, must ensure that the laboratory producing this data is accredited to ISO/IEC 17025, General Requirements for the Competence of Testing and Calibration Laboratories

Facilities that have very few analytical requirements may apply to the Director, Environmental Monitoring and Evaluation Branch of Alberta Environment, for an exemption.  If the exemption is granted, the facility must participate in and comply with the requirements of the Alternate Laboratory Data Quality Assurance Program (Alternate Program).  The Alternate Program requires facilities to demonstrate conformance to selected criteria from ISO/IEC 17025 through a site evaluation, and to demonstrate continued satisfactory performance through successful participation in proficiency testing.
